Design: In-Ear | Weight: 9 grams (without cord) | Cable length: 1.2 metres | Connection: 3.5mm jack | Frequency response: 15-22,000Hz | Drivers: Dynamic (9 mm neodymium magnet) | Sensitivity: 94 dB | Impedance: 12 Ω | Battery life: N/A | Wireless range: N/A
Accurate sound output
Great fit in the ear
No microphone
The SoundMagic E30 was launched way back in 2013, but still, it is quite relevant to current standards. The earpieces generate a very well-balanced sound output with unmatchable clarity. The best part is that you can enjoy pure music which is not distorted by excessive bass. The E30 focusses more on the treble side while maintaining a composed, yet tight, bass.
When it comes to building quality, the SoundMagic E30 fails to impress. The headphones are made of cheap plastic with sub-standard finishing. The earpieces are designed to be worn over the ears with its cables going around your earlobes. If properly plugged in, the E30 provides exceptional noise cancellation and are quite comfortable too.

Best over-ear headphones 2019: The best Bluetooth, noise-cancelling and wired headphones in the UK

Best Bluetooth and wired headphones

Over-ear headphones are a fantastic option for anyone who finds in-ears, earbuds or on-ear headphones

Best Bluetooth headphones

uncomfortable. There are thousands of over-ear headphones (or cans) to choose from, with features ranging from wired open backs aimed at audiophiles to portable Bluetooth headphones that feature active noise-cancelling technology.
Setting yourself an appropriate budget is paramount. You can pick up a set for as little as £30, but if you want to embark on an audiophile journey, be prepared to raid the bank. There’s something for everyone, however much you’re willing to spend.

To help you decide, we’ve put together a buying guide, below – or simply scroll further to find our favourite over-ear headphones. If you’re looking for something a little different, check out our dedicated guides to: Wired headphones | Bluetooth headphones | Noise-cancelling headphones | Cheap headphones | True wireless earbuds
How to choose the best over-ear headphones for you

Should I buy wired or wireless?
There are two categories for headphones: wired and wireless. The latter option works via Bluetooth and has no cord running from your head to a source device (such as a smartphone), so you’ll have more freedom to move around.
As you pass the £300 price mark, most headphones (although not all) require a wired connection. There’s an und reason: audio quality. Despite all the advances in modern technology, it’s simply impossible to beat an analogue connection. Aside from better audio fidelity, wired headphones don’t need a battery to operate, so they’ll never run out of charge.

  • That doesn’t mean you should disregard wireless. Wireless headphones were and still are designed to give you more freedom. If you’re looking to use headphones on the go, you might prefer a wireless solution. These tend to be more portable, easier to carry around and will work with any device that
  • supports Bluetooth – there’s no need to look for a 3.5mm headphone jack.
  • What is active noise cancellation?
  • Active noise cancellation (ANC) is a technology that was first used in aviation to block out ambient noise. Commercialised and pioneered by Bose, it’s come a long way in recent years and now features in many over-ear headphones. ANC works by having tiny microphones on the headphones listen out for ambient noise, and inverse that sound to dampen out the environment around you – effectively it allows you to concentrate on your music.
  • Are over-ear headphones comfortable?
Best Bluetooth headphones
As a general rule of thumb, over-ears provide better comfort than in-ears or on-ears. The headphones’ pads sit around your ears to provide a cushiony feel. It’s important to consider clamp force, which is the level of pressure the headphones put on your head. Loose headphones will naturally be more comfortable but are likely to fly off your head at the sign of any physical activity.
What’s the difference between open- and closed-back headphones?
There are a few audio characteristics that are associated with the design of the headphones: open-back sets deliver a more airy, transparent sound, while closed-back headphones provide a meatier bass response. Aside from audio, closed-back headphones isolate better than their open-back counterparts.
Should I care about driver size?
Generally speaking, the bigger the driver – the component in each ear cup that vibrates to produce soundwaves – the wider the soundstage. This results in better instrument separation, greater depth and a sense of space between you and the music. Driver size isn’t the be-all and end-all, however. In-ear headphones with the audio world’s smallest drivers can sound wider than a set of over-ear headphones.
What are lows, mids, highs and soundstage?
These are the four main keywords we use in our reviews: lows (bass), mids (vocals), highs (cymbals) and soundstage (width, depth and instrument separation). It’s important to look out for these terms as they’ll describe how sound is reproduced through the headphones. It’s not uncommon to find budget headphones with a V-shaped sound signature: accentuated highs and lows, and recessed mids.
What genre of music do you listen to the most?

Finally, we know some of you will respond with the classic answer: “I listen to everything”, but that doesn’t help anyone. Certain headphones are tuned to reproduce a strong bassline and, if you’re a lover of vocal tracks, you’ll find yourself bitterly disappointed. Alternatively, some focus on vocals only. Forward-sounding mids and accentuated highs will make those bass-heavy D’n’B tracks sound immeasurably boring.

The Superlux HD668B are designed to be used at home, as their open-back nature and design make them awkward to wear when you’re out and about. The headphones’ sonic qualities are extremely impressive for the price, though. They have a wide, airy soundstage and a crisp mid-bass slam. On the downside, the treble is very forward and can be a touch fatiguing. Choose these if you’re on a tight budget and want a set of decent-sounding over-ear headphones for listening to at home.

HiFiMan Sundara: The best open-back headphones for under £500

Price: £450 | Buy now from Amazon
The HiFiMan Sundara are among the most comfortable headphones we’ve ever tested; you can wear these for hours on end without having to take them off. Designed to be used at home, they house planar magnetic drivers rather than the regular dynamic drivers found in most over-ear headphones. As a result, they sound spectacularly good: the bass is light and controlled, the mids are balanced, the high tones are sparkly and the airy soundstage provides incredible width and depth to music. They’re simply the best open-back headphones you can buy under £500.

Denon AH-D7200: The best closed-back headphones for under £500
Price: £479 | Buy now from Amazon
If you typically listen to music in noisy surroundings, it’s worth considering closed-back headphones over open-back cans like the HiFiMan Sundara. The Denon AH-D7200s are an excellent example of the breed and elegantly designed, too, with ear cups that are clad in exotic-looking walnut veneer. Not only are they attractive, but they also provide a warmer, more fun sound signature. Its dynamic drivers deliver a hearty mid-bass and excellent sub-bass extension, forward-sounding mids, and plenty of energy at the top-end.
